After the U.S. sanctioned 14 senior Chinese officials at the deputy state level, the Chinese government announced the so-called "reciprocal sanctions" on December 10, but did not list the names of specific individuals or mention the freezing of assets in China, and public opinion ridiculed the reciprocal sanctions as a formality.
On December 10, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying claimed at a regular press conference that China had decided to impose so-called "reciprocal sanctions" on officials of the U.S. executive branch, members of Congress, non-governmental organizations and their immediate family members for their poor performance on Hong Kong-related issues and for their primary responsibility. At the same time, U.S. diplomatic passport holders will be denied visa-free access to Hong Kong and Macau on a temporary basis.
A few days ago, the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against 14 vice chairmen of the Chinese Communist Party's National People's Congress in response to the disqualification of four members of Hong Kong's Legislative Council by the Chinese authorities.
The U.S. detailed a list of the 14 sanctioned CCP vice state officials, including Cai Dafeng, Cao Jianming, Chen Zhu, Baima Chilin, Ding Zhongli, Hao Mingjin, Ai Liqin Yimingbhai, Ji Bingxuan, Shen Yueyue, Wan Exiang, Wang Chen, Wang Dongming, Wu Weihua, and Zhang Chunxian.
The Chinese side only verbally claimed to impose so-called "reciprocal sanctions" on the United States, but did not list specific sanctions or mention freezing the assets of the sanctioned individuals in China.
Netizens have ridiculed the CCP's so-called sanctions as a mere "empty shell" and a formality: "Reciprocity my ass, make sure to freeze their assets in China.
"Netizens inside the wall suggest a reciprocal countermeasure: freeze the assets of Biden's son."
"The big internal declaration is just for the pinkies to get high on themselves."
"It is important to mention the freezing of capital in China, all pending shares in China are frozen, such as Robert, accompanying aunt ah, Fan Erwu ah."
"Is it necessary, what is angry ah, only 14 people sanctioned ah, compared to 1.4 billion Chinese people equal to one did not sanction ah."
"I hope the U.S. side, immediately come to a, cancel Chinese diplomatic staff to the United States visa! That would be fun!"
In August this year, the U.S. side had announced sanctions against Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and 11 other senior Chinese and Hong Kong officials. China, in turn, introduced countermeasures by sanctioning U.S. Senators Rubio, Cruz, Hawley, Cotton, Toomey, Congressman Smith and the heads of several non-governmental organizations.
Observers say that all of these lawmakers are hardliners against the Chinese Communist Party in the U.S. Congress, but none are members of the Trump administration, making the so-called sanctions by the Chinese Communist Party ludicrous.
U.S. Senator Rubio, who has twice been placed on the CCP's sanctions list, responded, "Last month China [the CCP] banned me [from entering the country], today they sanctioned me, and I don't want to be too paranoid, but I'm starting to think they don't like me."
Rubio, proud of being sanctioned by the CCP, said in a July interview with Fox, "I have no intention of traveling to China anytime soon. And I don't expect them to roll out the red carpet for me. In fact I feel proud of it. Any time a totalitarian or evil regime opposes you, it means you're right."
The Trump administration has escalated sanctions against Chinese Communist Party officials step by step, and on Dec. 7, in response to the Communist Party's undermining of Hong Kong's autonomy, U.S. sanctions rose to the Communist Party's top inner circle, with 14 senior officials at the vice state level being sanctioned. The U.S. banned them and their immediate family members from entering the U.S., froze their assets in the U.S., and prohibited financial and property transactions.
The U.S. "precision strike" against the 14 vice chairmen drew a chorus of applause from netizens, with current affairs commentator Qin Peng chortling on Twitter, "Who says this sanction is not being used? It's not easy."
As expected, Zhongnanhai reacted sharply to the U.S. sanctions, shouting three "serious" and three "strong" in a row.
In response to the new list of sanctions, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang summoned Chargé d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing Fu De'en to say that the U.S. had committed the so-called three "serious" violations, namely "serious violation of the basic norms of international relations," "serious interference in China's (Communist Party) internal affairs" and "serious damage to Sino-U.S. relations," and declared that the Chinese side would counteract.
Hua Chunying also repeated the three "serious" and three "strong" at the press conference, netizens mocked that the Chinese Communist Party only play lip service, can not take substantive countermeasures.
