U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, said Sunday (Jan. 10) that a criminal investigation should be launched into alleged racketeering over the U.S. tech giant's blocking of social media outlet Parler.
In an interview on Fox News Channel's "Sunday Morning Futures" on Sunday, California Republican Rep. Nunes said that social media giants such as Facebook "can decide what is violent and what is not, and that's ridiculous.
He went on to say, "I don't know where the hell the Justice Department or the FBI is right now. This is a clear violation of antitrust laws, civil rights laws and the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) statute.
Nunes told show host Maria Bartiromo, "There should be a fraud investigation of everyone who coordinated this attack, which was not just against one company, but against all people like us, like me, like you Maria. "
Both Google and Apple have now taken Parler down from their online app stores, and Amazon.com has notified Parler that it will shut down all of Parler's servers at midnight Sunday.
Parler executives said the removal by Amazon will mean the software will be offline for a while and they are seeking an alternative Web service provider.
Parler founder and CEO John Matze said in a post on his platform that Amazon's move was "an attempt to completely eliminate free speech on the Internet.
In response to the tech giant's bullying, Nunes said, "These CEOs who do this should be criminally prosecuted. I've talked to many of my colleagues, House Republicans and several senators ...... Supreme Court, these federal judges, must step in."
Starting last Friday, social media outlets such as Twitter have permanently or suspended Trump's account, which led to a flood of Trump supporters flocking to the Parler platform and a sharp rise in downloads of Parler to No. 1 on Apple's app store. But Apple and Google subsequently took down Parler, and Amazon pulled the plug and announced it would stop providing web services for Parler as of midnight Sunday. This will force the Parler platform to be discontinued for some time.
