My Father Asked Me What I Planned to Do After Graduation

It was Saturday evening. My father was sitting at the kitchen table, looking through some bills and documents. I had just finished washing the dishes when he asked me to sit down.

"Have you given any more thought to what you're going to do after graduation?"

I knew this conversation was coming. We had talked about college expenses, summer jobs, and my future several times, but I still didn't have a definite answer.

"I've been thinking about it," I replied. "I want to find a summer job first. I need to earn some money before making a decision about college."

My father put down his papers and looked at me.

"That's a reasonable plan. But what do you want to do in the longer term? Have you considered what kind of career you might be interested in?"

I hesitated. To be honest, I had no clear career objective. Some of my classmates wanted to become engineers, teachers, nurses, or business managers. Daniel had already decided to study business administration at a local college. I, however, was still trying to understand what I was good at and what kind of work I would enjoy.

"I don't want to choose a career simply because it sounds impressive," I said. "I want to find something that suits my abilities and gives me a reasonable opportunity to earn a living."

My father nodded.

"That's important. But you should also understand the difference between a job and a career. A job provides income. A career involves long-term development, professional skills, and opportunities for advancement."

I had never thought about that distinction so carefully.

He continued, "When you look for work, don't focus only on the hourly wage. Consider the working environment, the responsibilities, the training opportunities, and whether the position could help you gain useful experience."

I realized that finding a job involved more than simply sending out applications and accepting the first offer.

"What if I can't find anything?" I asked.

"Then you need to adjust your approach. The employment market can be competitive, especially for people who have little or no work experience. You may have to start with an entry-level position."

"Doesn't that mean doing basic work for very little money?"

"Not necessarily. Entry-level doesn't automatically mean meaningless. Many successful people began with relatively simple responsibilities. What matters is whether you are learning something, developing good habits, and becoming more capable."

My father gave me an example from his own working life.

"When I first started working, I didn't have much experience either. I had to learn how to communicate with customers, meet deadlines, solve problems, and work with people who had different personalities. Those skills became valuable later."

I began to understand that professional ability was not something people acquired overnight.

"What if I take a job that has nothing to do with what I eventually want to study?" I asked.

"That can still be useful. A summer job can help you develop transferable skills. Communication, time management, teamwork, problem-solving, and financial responsibility are useful in almost every industry."

He paused for a moment before adding, "You should also learn how to evaluate an opportunity. A position may offer a higher wage but require an unreasonable schedule. Another job may pay less but provide better training or more stable hours. You need to consider the whole picture."

I thought about the job advertisements I had been reading online. Some offered minimum wage, while others promised competitive compensation. A few required previous experience, even though the positions were described as suitable for students.

"Sometimes the advertisements make it sound as if every employer wants someone with experience," I said. "How can a young person get experience if nobody is willing to hire them?"

My father smiled.

"That's a common challenge for new workers. Employers often want evidence that an applicant can be reliable, responsible, and capable of learning. You may not have professional experience, but you can still demonstrate those qualities."

"How?"

"Think about your school activities, volunteer work, group projects, and responsibilities at home. Did you organize anything? Did you help solve a problem? Did you complete a difficult assignment on time? These experiences can show an employer something about your character and abilities."

I had always assumed that a résumé was mainly a list of previous jobs. Now I understood that it could also describe relevant experience, skills, education, and achievements.

My father suggested that I prepare a short personal statement explaining what I could contribute to an employer.

"Don't exaggerate your qualifications," he warned. "Be honest about what you know and what you still need to learn. Employers don't expect a high school graduate to have the experience of a professional. They want to know whether you are dependable and willing to improve."

I went upstairs and opened my laptop. I looked at the résumé I had started preparing a few days earlier. It seemed rather empty.

I added a section about my education, computer skills, school projects, and volunteer activities. I also wrote down some personal strengths: punctuality, willingness to learn, attention to detail, and the ability to follow instructions.

Then I searched for summer employment opportunities in my area.

One advertisement caught my attention. A local supermarket was hiring part-time store assistants. The responsibilities included stocking shelves, organizing merchandise, assisting customers, and maintaining a clean working area.

The wage was not particularly high, but the schedule seemed flexible. The position also offered on-the-job training.

I showed the advertisement to my father.

"That looks like a reasonable opportunity," he said. "You should apply."

"Do you think working in a supermarket will help my future career?"

"It might. You will learn how a business operates, how inventory is managed, how customers make purchasing decisions, and how employees coordinate their work. Even a basic position can give you insight into the real economy."

That answer surprised me. I had been thinking about the job mainly as a way to earn money. My father was encouraging me to look at it as an opportunity to observe and learn.

Before going to bed, I reviewed my financial plan. I wanted to save part of my earnings for college expenses, keep some money for transportation and daily needs, and build a small emergency fund.

I also realized that earning money would bring new responsibilities. I would have to manage my schedule, arrive at work on time, communicate professionally, and take responsibility for my decisions.

The next morning, I told my father that I was ready to apply.

"Good," he said. "Remember, your first job doesn't have to determine the rest of your life. But the attitude you develop during your first job may influence the way you approach work for many years."

I thought about his words.

Graduation had seemed like the end of an important chapter in my life. Now I was beginning to see it as the start of a much larger journey.

I still didn't know exactly what I wanted to become. I didn't have a perfect plan, and I certainly didn't have all the answers.

But I had a practical first step.

I was going to find a job, earn my own money, gain some experience, and gradually discover what kind of future I wanted to build.

For the first time, that uncertainty didn't seem quite so frightening.

A Young Person's First Step into the Labour Market

English Reading
Entering the labour market is an important stage in a young person's life. For many high school graduates, finding a first job is not simply about earning money. It is also an opportunity to develop professional skills, understand workplace expectations, and become financially independent.

However, entering the labour market is not always easy. Many employers prefer applicants who already have relevant experience. At the same time, young people often struggle to obtain that experience because they have not yet had an opportunity to work.

This creates a difficult situation. Employers want experienced workers, while inexperienced workers need employers who are willing to provide training. Internships, apprenticeships, part-time positions, and entry-level employment can help reduce this gap.

Education also plays an important role. A diploma or degree may improve a person's employment prospects, but formal education does not automatically guarantee a successful career. Employers often look for a combination of academic knowledge, practical skills, communication abilities, and personal responsibility.

Another important issue is the relationship between wages and productivity. In economic discussions, productivity generally refers to the amount of goods or services produced with a given amount of labour and resources.

When workers become more productive, businesses may be able to produce more efficiently. This can support business growth and, under suitable conditions, create opportunities for higher wages. However, productivity gains do not automatically translate into higher employee compensation. The distribution of economic benefits also depends on competition, business decisions, labour-market conditions, and public policy.

Young workers should therefore understand more than just the advertised hourly wage. They should consider the total compensation package, working conditions, job security, training opportunities, and the possibility of career advancement.

Financial independence is another major responsibility. A first paycheque can be exciting, but earning money is only one part of managing personal finances. Individuals must also understand budgeting, taxation, savings, debt, and future expenses.

For governments, creating a healthy employment environment is an important economic responsibility. Policies concerning education, vocational training, taxation, business regulation, and labour standards can influence how easily people enter the workforce.

A strong economy should provide opportunities for people who are willing to work, learn, and improve their abilities. Young people need access to practical training and fair employment opportunities. Businesses need a stable environment in which they can invest, expand, and create jobs.

Ultimately, a person's first job is only the beginning. The habits developed during those early working years can influence future opportunities. Reliability, discipline, professional communication, and a willingness to learn are valuable throughout an entire career.

A young person may not know exactly where life will lead. That is perfectly normal. What matters is developing the ability to make informed decisions, recognize opportunities, and take responsibility for the future.
